Two-Lane Blacktop (15) – 1971, USA, 98 mins
Director: Monte Hellman
Stars: James Taylor, Warren Oates, Laurie Bird
In this cult favorite road film two iconic American musicians play their only film roles. A mechanic (Dennis Wilson of The Beach Boys) and a driver (singer-songwriter James Taylor) live only to race and maintain their 1955 Chevy. Heading east from California with no particular agenda, they give a girl (Laurie Bird) a ride. The trio then encounters an overbearing GTO driver (Warren Oates) who agrees to race them to New York, each side putting at stake their most prized possession: their car.
“Directed with a European stateliness by Monte Hellman, it stars musicians James Taylor and Dennis Wilson as two gnomic road warriors who cruise America’s faded byways in a 55 Chevy, racing for kicks. En route to, well, nowhere, they meet an older guy (Warren Oates), a former TV producer who challenges them to a race to Washington DC. But this is not a film about narrative but loneliness and life on the road, which it captures with a mysterious brilliance.”
★★★★★ – Empire
“Misunderstood by critics and audiences in search of the next big Youth Movie, and subsequently reviled by the very studio that had produced it, Hellman’s film was something of a buried treasure for many years. There were prints here and there, but they were scarce… it was not until the late nineties, when it appeared on laserdisc and then DVD in the correct aspect ratio, that it assumed its proper place as one of the most striking American films of its era. At this point, it is well on its way to being recognized as one of the greatest, and most moving.”

From 7pm to 8pm before the film, we will be playing the entirety of Gene Clark’s cult 70’s solo album ‘No Other’, in association with The Drift Record Shop (courtesy of 4AD). Rereleased as a deluxe reissue this fall, and remastered at Abbey Road Studios, the album will be available on November 8th in honor of the late musician’s 75th birthday. The 1974 masterpiece gets the reappraisal it’s long overdue and we’re delighted to be exclusively playing it in a 5.1 surround mix.
To add to the evening we will be serving NEW LION BREWERY beer ON TAP
