So Long, My Son (12A) – 2019, China, 185 mins
Director: Wang Xiaoshuai
‘We’re waiting to grow old’. This sentence briefly sums up Yaoyun and his wife Liyun’s bitter realisation about their lives. When their son drowns after being goaded into swimming by his friend Haohao, Yaojun and Liyun leave their home and their friends, Haohao’s parents, to plunge into the big city where nobody knows them. Their adopted son Liu Xing does not offer them the comfort they had hoped for, defiantly rejecting his ‘foreign’ parents, and one day disappears altogether. The couple are repeatedly enmeshed in their memories and finally, they decide to return to the site of their lost hopes. In this family saga spanning three decades of Chinese history, the private and the political merge and the individual gets caught up in the gears of a society in the throes of constant change.
A stunning film that traces the social consequences of China’s ‘one child’ policy.
Doors open for fine wines and all manner of drinks at 7pm. Film at 7.30pm.
