Judy (12A) – 2019, UK, 118 mins,
Director: Rupert Goold
Thirty years after finding global stardom in The Wizard of Oz, Judy Garland arrives in London to perform a five-week sold-out run at The Talk of the Town. After working for most of her life, the showbiz star is exhausted and fragile, gripped by a desire to be back home with her kids. Featuring a show- stopping performance from Renée Zellweger, Judy celebrates the voice, the capacity for love, and the sheer pizzazz of “the world’s greatest entertainer”.
“This is Renée Zellweger’s Judy. It doesn’t belong to Rupert Goold, its director. Nor does it belong to Tom Edge, its screenwriter. It’s a performance of such overwhelming force that it wrests authorship from every other hand that guided the film’s creation. Zellweger is magnetic as Judy Garland, depicted in the final years of her life.”
– Clarisse Loughrey, The Independent
“’I incorporated emblems from Judy Garlands extensive career, framing her present moment with symbols from her past… The wallpaper in the hotel bedroom set is a reference to the Emerald City skyline. The mirror in Judy’s Talk of The Town dressing room is inlaid with a poppy motif and hung with a rainbow ornament. Sid Luft’s L.A house is dressed with memorabilia from the films they worked on together, including A Star Is Born.”
– Set decorator for ‘Judy’, Stella Fox
“I implore you to go and see this film. Laugh and weep, bawl your eyes out—she deserves every tear.”
– Zoe Gahan, Vanity Fair
Doors open for drinks at 7:00pm. Film at 8:00pm.
