Cabaret (15) – 1972, USA, 121 mins

Director: Bob Fosse

Cast: Liza Minnelli, Michael York, Joel Grey, Helmut Griem

Who says politics and entertainment don’t mix? Like a warning from history, Cabaret charts the rise of fascism against the pre-war sexual freedoms and decadence of Weimar Berlin. Adapted from the Broadway show by Kander & Ebb – and based on the collection of short stories by Christopher Isherwood, I am a Camera – this hard-hitting musical drama is set in decadent 1930s Berlin during Hitler’s rise to power. Brilliantly directed and choreographed by Bob Fosse the film chronicles Cambridge student Brian Roberts’ friendship with the high-spirited Sally Bowles, a singer at the sleazy Kit Kat nightclub.

‘Here the festivities are overseen by a master of ceremonies, an Oscar-winning Joel Grey,  whose determination to keep the merriment going, at whatever psychic cost, has a poignant compulsiveness. When the song Cabaret comes at the end, you realize for the first time that it isn’t a song of happiness, but of desperation. The context makes the difference. In the same way, the context of Germany on the eve of the Nazi ascent to power makes the entire musical into an unforgettable cry of despair.’  Roger Ebert
