Actor-turned-critic Alexander (Josephson) is celebrating his birthday with his family in their idyllic lakeside house when they hear news of an impending nuclear conflict. Alexander first tries to bargain with God, then postman Otto (Edwall) advises him to seduce his maid Maria (Gudr\u00fan G\u00edslad\u00f3tt\u00edr), reputedly a witch.
