Filmed over nine years, Zero As You Are follows the extraordinary journey of a young person searching for a place to belong beyond society’s expectations of gender.
At the heart of the film is the story of the first documented case in Japan of someone undergoing gender-affirming surgery, only to realise they had chosen the wrong path. In Japan, transgender people seeking to change their legal gender are still required to undergo sterilising surgery, a system that can leave individuals making life-altering decisions with profound physical and emotional consequences.
But rather than framing this experience as a simple “failure”, director Miyuki Tokoi asks us to question what success, identity and authenticity really mean. As the story unfolds, we encounter people from different generations and walks of life, each reflecting on gender, belonging and the courage it takes to live truthfully.
Compassionate, deeply human and rich with nuance, Zero As You Are resists easy answers. Instead, it invites each of us to consider who we really are, and what it means to live honestly—with empathy for ourselves and for others.
