THEATRE DOUBLE BILL: WITHOUT U & THE FIVE FLAVOURS OF MASCULINITY

November 21 @ 1:30 pm
£7.50 – £10.00
A double-bill of original, one-act plays, locally created and fresh from packed houses and fabulous reviews at the Totnes Fringe Festival.
This is a jostling juxtaposition of the genders, each play exploring language, friendship, intimacy, relationships and identity through the lens of their sex.
Without U (16+) 35m
Something is happening to our language. The phone has been taken over by texts and tickboxes. Emojis, memes and gifs replace words, replace feelings.
The spoken word is in danger. It is regularly recorded. Your words can be used against you. People are increasingly secretive. Social media is antisocial.
In a new development, talking has been privatised. Restrictions are in place to limit conversation. Individuals can now only use one vowel.
Despite these difficulties, four women are determined to speak to you. To tell their stories.
The Five Flavours of Masculinity (12+) 50m

Before all the protecting, providing, hunting and gathering, what are men even for? What is our prime function and what is our biology screaming at us to do? Here at Silverback we want to take a good long look at ourselves and our essential “masculinity”, in all its many shades and hues. Through conversation, imagination, poetry and song, join us in “the pub” for our light-hearted exploration of Bloke-dom!

This show is a conversation about what it means to be a man and an exploration of modern day masculinity. We  explore issues around our virility, fertility, masculinity and vasectomy. We are two theatrically inclined blokes with complicated leanings, learning to lean on each other from time to time; dads, brothers, uncles, mates. Some bloke’s sons. We are actors, pretenders, fakers and shakers. We are engineer! Yet we encompass much – we are complicated (despite the rumours). We are providers, suppliers, users and abusers (to some degree). We are magnificent DIY disasters.
So we’re coming out of the shed (metaphorically and heterosexually). And we believe that there is room to explore what it is to be male, about how we choose to present and about our ever-changing roles and responsibilities. About how we see ourselves and the many ways in which we are seen.

Cafe opens from 10am  serving delicious home made cakes, Freshly baked cookies, Salcombe Dairy ice cream, Crankhouse Coffee and Specialty Teas.

Bar opens from 12pm serving cocktails, fine wines, craft beers and bar snacks. Last orders 10 minutes before the film starts.

Performance starts promptly at 1:30pm.
