Dir: John Landis
Cast: John Belushi, Dan Aykroyd, Â Carrie Fisher
Genre: Comedy
To celebrate Totnes Cinema’s 10th anniversary, we’re bringing back one of our all-time favourite films. Screened shortly after we first opened our doors, this is a bona fide classic and the perfect way to mark a decade of cinema in Totnes.
Convinced they’re on a “mission from God”, ex-convict brothers Jake (John Belushi) and Elwood (Dan Aykroyd) set out to save the orphanage where they grew up by reuniting their old rhythm and blues band and raising the money needed to keep its doors open.
Their quest soon spirals into glorious chaos as they find themselves pursued by police, neo-Nazis, a vengeful country-and-western band, and a heavily armed, mysterious woman (played with unforgettable gusto by Carrie Fisher), all determined to stop them in their tracks.
Packed with legendary musical performances from icons including Ray Charles, James Brown and Aretha Franklin, alongside one of the most spectacular car chases ever committed to film, The Blues Brothers remains an exuberant, joyous and utterly irresistible cinematic experience.
“It’s 106 miles to Chicago, we got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it’s dark… and we’re wearing sunglasses.”
