Beautifully restored in 4K, Andrei Tarkovsky’s visionary final film unfolds in the hours before a nuclear holocaust. Actor-turned-critic Alexander (Josephson) is celebrating his birthday with his family in their idyllic lakeside house when they hear news of an impending nuclear conflict. Alexander first tries to bargain with God, then postman Otto (Edwall) advises him to seduce his maid Maria (Gudrún GÃsladóttÃr), reputedly a witch. Best known for its blazing climax, Tarkovsky’s final work feels like a fond farewell.
